Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award Presented to Carl Bildt

The Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award was presented to Carl Bildt, one of the most prominent European politicians and diplomats of recent decades, Prime Minister (1991-1994) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006-2014) of Sweden. He was honored for his unwavering commitment to the security and development of Central and Eastern Europe.

As a seasoned Swedish politician, he worked for peace in the Balkans, mediating and playing important roles in the reconstruction process. While serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the early 21st century, he and Radosław Sikorski launched the EU’s Eastern Partnership, which was a key instrument for bringing Ukraine and five other countries closer to the EU. He staunchly supports Ukraine, drawing attention to Russia’s expansionist intentions.

As prime minister, he negotiated Sweden’s accession to the EU, and after retiring from active politics, he publicly expressed support for the country’s membership in NATO. He is now widely recognized as an authority on international affairs and security.

During the ceremony, the laureate emphasized Poland’s impressive development in recent decades and the importance of a vibrant, dynamic democracy. He noted that while Polish public debate can be turbulent, its energy is a source of strength for the country and an inspiration for other countries in the region. He also emphasized that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union should remain a strategic goal for Europe and a key element in building lasting security on the continent.

The Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award honors individuals and institutions working to advance freedom, civil society, and European solidarity. Established by Jan Nowak-Jeziorański, it is presented by the College of Eastern Europe, the City of Wrocław, the University of Wrocław, and the Ossoliński National Institute.
