On June 26-27, KEW’s experts participated in the WeimarPlus Roundtable, titled “Enlarging the Union, Consolidating Democracy: Which Priorities, Which Tools?”. Over the course of two days, experts and policymakers from Poland, France, Germany, Austria, the European Commission, and candidate countries convened to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the future enlargement of the EU.
In four panels, participants discussed:
- What lessons are to be learnt from the hitherto EU approach towards fostering democracy and the rule of law in candidate countries.
- The differences and similarities that prospective member states in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe are facing on their EU path.
- How to think the promotion of democracy and the rule of law in candidate countries and member states together.
- Which role the Weimar Triangle and Weimar Plus cooperation can play in this endeavour.
The Roundtable was jointly organised by the Austro-French Centre for Rapprochement in Europe and Stiftung Genshagen
